Samuel Surgick Obituary

On Tuesday May 31, 2022, an Angel escorted home to God, Samuel Lee Surgick (Sammy), also known as “Yammas”. Samuel was born on October 7, 1955 in Albany, NY to the late Reverend Dr. Odell Wesley Surgick Sr. and Catherine Howard Surgick. Samuel attended Albany High School which he graduated in 1973. He also attended Junior College of Albany (JCA). Sammy (beloved husband of 45 years) married Dianna Patrick September 4, 1976.

Sammy grew up in Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church with his sisters and brothers. He was baptized at an early age. Sammy diligently worked at the Port of Albany and eventually retired. Sammy also worked at Action Lanes Bowling Alley in Western Albany for over 10 years.

Sammy loved his sports! At a young age, Sammy found a passion for baseball starting with playing in the Arbor Hill Little League. He then went on to play at the Arbor Hill Softball Field. Sammy also excelled in basketball. He played for Albany High School and then graduated to play at college level at the JCA. Sammy’s passions didn’t end at playing; he also became a referee for the local basketball recreation leagues.

As Sammy grew older, he began to grow an excitement for bowling. He began his calling for bowling with the Mount Olive Bowling League. He then continued to be a part of multiple leagues, including L&R All-stars, Richards, and Albany Travel League. Sammy was also part of the Actions Lanes Semi-Classic weekly league. Sammy went on to accomplish several bowling trophies and championship rings, which he received for bowling several perfect scoring games. Sammy enjoyed mentoring younger bowlers in the league as well.

Sammy was one of a kind. He was known to speak his mind and uncompromisingly. Everyone also knew him to be full of life, loving, encouraging, and always present. Sammy carried a smile that would light up a whole room wherever he was. He had a great sense of humor and an infectious laugh. He surely knew how to keep a party going.  He was a man who wore many hats. There was never a sad moment when you were in his presence.

Sammy leaves to cherish his loving memories with his wife Dianna Surgick, his three children: Samuel Surgick Jr., Nakia Watkins, Jennifer (Elisha) Dowling. He leaves his eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His two brothers Wesley (Mary)  Dorin and Arnold (Theresa) Surgick, his sister Sheila (Gary) Williams; brother-in-law Willie Joe Robinson; sister-in-law Viola Surgick, sister-in-law Gladys Davis and brother-in–law William (Mary) Patrick; goddaughter Amari Morris; and a host of nieces, nephews, special friends and family.
