HONORING THE LIFE OF REVEREND DOCTOR WILLIE J. STOVALL, SR.
Rev. Dr. Willie James Stovall Sr., 80, of Albany, New York, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 8, 1946, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Mary and Isaiah Stovall. Rev. Willie Stovall spent his early years in Memphis, Tennessee, where he developed a sturdy foundation of faith, family, and music. He confessed hope in Christ at the Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Southaven, Mississippi in 1957.
It was during his early childhood years that he met Irene Darling, who would later become the love of his life. As children, Irene sang with the Darling Sisters, while he sang with the Stovall Singers. It seemed that everywhere the Darling Sisters performed, the Stovall Singers were sure to follow. Irene would often question why he was always around, and he would confidently tell her, “You’re going to be my wife.” At the time, she would laugh and reply, “I wouldn’t have you,” but as time would reveal, God had other plans. After years of persistence, Irene gave him a chance, and the two began dating in 1966. Following his service in the United States Army, they were united in marriage on December 10, 1970. He later owned and operated three businesses: a grocery store, a gas station, and an auto repair shop.
In 1976, Rev. Stovall began preaching the Word of God with his initial sermon in December of that year. In 1977, Rev. Stovall, along with his brother, Eugene, erected the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. He became Pastor of Zion Field Missionary Baptist Church of Earle, Arkansas in 1982. He would later serve as Pastor at the Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church in Crawfordville, Arkansas in 1984. Rev. Stovall is a 1992 graduate of the Ambassador Bible College in Pasadena, California and a 1998 graduate of Andersonville Baptist Seminary College, receiving both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. He also received his Doctor of Divinity from Martha’s Vineyard Seminary.
In 1989, Rev. Stovall, Mrs. Irene Stovall and their children relocated to Albany, New York where they continued to build a loving and devoted family. Rev. Stovall continued his calling in ministry where he served as the senior elected Pastor of the Mount Olive Southern Missionary Baptist Church for 37 years. He was active in many organizations and activities which benefited his congregation including serving as Moderator of the Hudson River Frontier Missionary Baptist Association for two terms; serving as a member of the National Baptist Convention; serving as a member of the Public Relations Board and the New Body Committee of the Empire State Missionary Baptist Convention.
In April of 1999, the City of Albany Common Council set forth a Resolution recognizing the commitment and contributions of Pastor Stovall to the people of the City of Albany and honored him on his tenth anniversary as Pastor of the Mount Olive Southern Missionary Baptist Church.
