Rev. Hezekiah Washington, Sr Obituary

Reverend Hezekiah “Pop” Washington, Sr., 85, was born on December 15, 1940, in Sumter, South
Carolina, and went home to be with the Lord on May 26, 2026, at Albany Medical Center,
surrounded by his beloved wife, Fannie Washington, and their children.

Reverend Washington was lovingly raised by his grandparents, Elder Joseph Washington and Casie Mack Washington, who played a significant role in shaping his faith and character. He was born to Mother, Isabelle James Myers and was also nurtured by his stepfather, Roosevelt Myers.

He was blessed with a large and loving family that included five sisters and five brothers. From an
early age, his family instilled in him the belief that God is love and that “only what you do for Christ
will last.” Raised in the church, Reverend Washington developed a strong foundation of faith and
remained a devoted servant of God throughout his life, faithfully living out the principles he
cherished and sharing them with all who knew him.

He was united in holy matrimony to Fannie Washington of Sumter, South Carolina, and together they
shared 65 blessed years of love, faith, and devotion. Along with his beloved wife, Fannie
Washington, he leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Annie Melton and Sophia Washington;
his son, Hezekiah Washington Jr.; and Anthony Eubanks, whom he lovingly raised as his adopted
son. He also cherished his godsons, Craig Willingham, C.J. Barber, and Sammie Surgick, as well as
his devoted son-in-law, Fredrick Melton. Hezekiah was the eldest of eleven children. He is survived
by his brothers, Roosevelt Myers Jr., George Myers, Mos M. Myers, and Christopher Myers; and his
sister, Lillie Carraway. Reverend Washington (“Pop”) also leaves behind a host of grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, neighbors, the Mount Olive Church Family
and all who shared in his laughter, wisdom, kindness, and love.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Myers; and his sisters, Catherine Herbert, Adeline
Blackmon, Andrena Moses, and Melissa Myers.

Education and Vocation
Reverend Washington received his early education in the public schools of Sumter, South Carolina.
He graduated from Eastern High School and attended Morris College in Sumter, where he majored
in Religious Education. A gifted athlete, he played football at both Eastern High School and Morris
College. Later, while attending Albany Business College, he majored in Business Accounting. June
2012 became a graduate (BA in Theology) Mid-Hudson Bible Institute, Poughkeepsie, New York
He retired in 2001 after faithfully serving for 25 years as a bus driver with CDTA, where he touched
countless lives within the community each day.

Church Service and Ministry
In 1976, Reverend Washington was ordained as a Deacon at Mount Olive Southern Missionary
Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Odell Wesley Surgick. He faithfully served for
several years as Vice Chairman of the Board of Deacons, where he gained valuable wisdom and
experience in ministry.

In 1987 , he was elected Chairman of the Board of Deacons and served faithfully in that role for 17
years. On November 7, 2004, Reverend Washington acknowledged his call to ministry. He was
ordained Reverend on December 8, 2024 by the late Reverend Willie James Stovall, Sr.
An anointed servant of God, Reverend Washington preached the Gospel and lived the Word daily.
One of the Scriptures closest to his heart was Luke 4:18–19.

Worship and Teaching
Reverend Washington joyfully sang hymns celebrating the goodness of the Lord as a lead singer
with the Chouresters and the Male Chorus. He also faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher and
instructor for New Members Class. He took great pride in the work of the church and dedicated
himself to encouraging others to grow in Christ.

A Life Well Lived
Reverend. Hezekiah “Pop” Washington, Sr. served God, his family, and his community with
unwavering faith, humility, and love. To so many, he was more than a father, grandfather, minister, or
friend — he was simply “Pop.” He was everybody’s Pop: a steady presence, a faithful teacher, a
joyful singer, a trusted advisor, and a tireless servant whose love reached far beyond his own family.
His legacy will forever endure in the lives he touched and the souls he led closer to Christ.

Cherished Scripture
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he
hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight
to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” —
Luke 4:18–19
