He began his apprenticeship under the watchful eye of his Uncle Matthew Thompson at Modern Barber Shop where he became a master barber and remained until retiring due to illness. He loved his craft he became a mentor and allowed many to begin their careers at the shop. Which was a special place. Many friends and relatives can recall sitting in that 1st chair in the "Shop' where he would lend an ear give advice even if it wasn't asked for, It was the place in which talking trash, boasting, bragging, listening to music and shooting the breeze was part of the service. He had a way of exaggerating a story that brought everyone together in laughter. He was a staple in the community everyone knew James or "Dark" as many of his friends referred to him as. He sometimes took on the role of mentoring the youth in the area that would stop by the shop. He provided free haircuts to men and women scheduled for court or going to school or job interviews, He was dedicated to serving he visited clients in the hospital, nursing home, or at their residence.
He Treasured his relationship with his baby sister Renee who unselfishly cared for him in every capacity with unwavering love and respect. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and would enjoy hearing and celebrating their accomplishments. He was an avid music fan making cassettes and cd's titled Love Doctor. If you knew him. You would know that he had an unmatched loved for Cadillacs, James was very much a loving gentle giant that will truly be missed by many.
