Mr. Charles Matthews, Sr. Obituary

Obituary for Charles (Charlie) Hugh Matthews, Sr.

Charles (Charlie) Hugh Matthews, Sr. was welcomed into this world by his loving parents Willie Matthews and Georgia James Matthews on November 15, 1928. As the first born to Willie and Georgia, Charlie was the oldest sibling to his sister Mildred Matthews and his brothers John David Matthews and Willie Earl Matthews. Born and raised in Dunn, North Carolina, Charlie and his family moved to Durham, North Carolina in the 1950s. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1950 where he worked in the Signal Corp and was promoted to Sergeant before he was honorably discharged. Charlie graduated from Harnett County High School and continued his education at North Carolina A&T, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. After graduation, he was employed by the federal government working for the VA Hospital in Albany as a Manual Arts Therapist. Charlie loved his job and spent 50+ years working at the VA. He received many accolades and awards while working there. When he retired in 2012, he spent his time volunteering at his church, a role that was so important to him. Charlie affiliated with the Union Missionary Baptist Church when he arrived in Albany in the late 1950s and had been a faithful member until his death. He enjoyed being a part of the Trustee Ministry, Sunday School, and Christian Education.

Charlie and Janet, his beloved wife, eloped. She joined him in Albany in 1965. From this union a son was born in 1968, Charles Hugh Matthews, Jr. The family was then three and they shared many happy days watching over family and friends, and engaging in work, church, and various activities.

God permitted many happy days for Charlie and his family. He had the opportunity to spend many vacations on Kiawah Island, in South Carolina, at weddings in Hilton Head, CIAA Basketball Tournaments, graduations, and happy reunions.

Charlie is predeceased by his parents; his brother, John David; his sister, Mildred Williams (Bishop); and other cousins, friends, and relatives. Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife, Janet Matthews; son, Charles Jr. (Tracy); granddaughter, Ayanna; goddaughters, Natalie Brown and Kyla McCargo; his brother, Willie Earl (Shirley); brother-in-law, Dr. James Hunter; sisters-in-law, Madelynn Hunter and Selena Hunter; nephews: Harrison Matthews, Bishop Williams, Jr., John Hunter, Jr. (QuRita), Prince Matthews, Amir Matthews, and John Hunter, III (Shayla); nieces: Simone Williams, Pamela Hunter, Esq., Sharon Hunter, and Jacqueline Hunter; his good friend, Charlie Riggins; great nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives, friends, and church family.

A life well-lived and now at rest.
