Celebration Of Life
Minister Johnny R. Brown Sr.
November 12, 1965 – November 21, 2025
“Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.” — Matthew 25:23
Johnny R. Brown Sr. was born on November 12, 1965, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Irene Stovall and the late John Brown, with whom he is now lovingly reunited. At just two years old, Johnny was welcomed into the home of Reverend Willie James Stovall, a man who never treated him as anything less than his own and who stood as a powerful father figure throughout his life.
As a child, Johnny was athletic, full of energy, and truly a force to be reckoned with. In 1982, he graduated from Capuchino High School. He later attended college with dreams of becoming a professional football player for the San Francisco 49ers—however, God had other plans for his life.
In 1989, Johnny moved to Albany, New York, where he joined Mt. Olive Southern Missionary Baptist Church. He began working at Memorial Hospital, and it was there that he met not only the love of his life—but his greatest blessing. From the moment he laid eyes on her, he knew she was “the one.” It was truly love at first sight, a moment that forever shifted the course of his heart and future. In 1991, Johnny married the woman he knew was meant for him—his heart, his partner, his peace, and his “Lil Mama,” the name he lovingly called her from the very beginning. That same year, they welcomed their first child together.
In 1992, Johnny and his wife opened their own childcare business, which they faithfully operated for 33 years. Soon after came what he proudly called “The Browns Bunch.” Johnny was deeply passionate about his wife and loved his children with everything in him. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for his family. He never went a single day without telling them, “I love you”—often saying it five times a day just to make sure they felt it. Sometimes they would laugh and say, “Pop, you already said it. How many times you gonna say it?” And he would respond, “One day you gonna wish you could hear me say it, but I’ll be dead and gone.” Those words now echo as a reminder of just how deeply he loved.
Johnny’s dedication, loyalty, and devotion as a husband and father were the foundation of his life. Outside of his love for family and football, Johnny—known lovingly as “Pop” by some and “JB” by others—enjoyed playing horseshoes and dominoes. He loved to dance, stay in the house, and listen to the blues. He was a true gentleman with a rare and beautiful soul—a man of remarkable warmth and sincerity. To know him was to experience quiet strength and a heart overflowing with goodness.
Johnny also attended Christ Center Unity Missionary Baptist Church, where he became a licensed minister in 2014, continuing his walk of faith and service to others.
Johnny was preceded in death by his father, John Brown; his grandmother, Luerenda Brown-Woods; his brothers, Darrin Brown, Conturas Stovall, and Herbert Darling; his grandson, Hemi Coleman; his nephew, Jaylen Brown; and his in-laws, Lorine Williams, Anita Williams, and Byron Terrell.
He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Joyce Brown; his parents, Irene and Willie James Stovall; his children Kiara Johnson, and together they share Johnny Jr., JahRachel, JahTasia, Jah-Von-Tay, JahYae, JahLiyah, and JahMarion Brown. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren Andreas, Jace, Jayon, Jexx, Amyla, Willow, Blu, Dolla, Jahyae Jr., Aiko, Keiran, and Journey.
Johnny is also survived by his brothers Tyrin Brown, Keith, Kuchisca (Kanisha), Willie Jr. (Paris), Fundro, Larsell (Takira), Craig Stovall, Justin Halpin, George Bennett, Christopher Johnson, and Michael Oliver; his sisters Luerenda (Frankie) Lemalu, Mary, Shavon, Shaquanna, and Latasha Stovall; a host of in-laws Felicia Terrell, Michael (Acasia), George (Angela), Jerry (Michelle), and a countless number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
Johnny Brown — the BEST MAN in town.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want… Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” — Psalm 23
His legacy of love, faith, strength, laughter, and devotion will live on forever in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
