Mary Martha Gibson was born November 2nd, 1943, in Manning, S.C. She passed away on December 29th, 2025, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, New York. Mary was the daughter of the late Joe Robinson and Della Mae Starks Robinson-McCray.
Mary attended and graduated from Manning Training School in Manning, S.C. She relocated to the New York City area, and she eventually moved to Albany, NY. After her arrival to Albany, she became active in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where she practiced her faith and developed long-term friendships that lasted throughout her lifetime.
Mary was employed at The Workshop Incorporated, The Williams Press Printing Company, Picotte Company, and she became a certified nursing assistant. Mary married the love of her life, Julius Washington Gibson, June 20, 1963. To this union, four children were born. She had strong family values, a “sharp” sense of humor, and impressed upon her children to have a strong sense of pride in themselves and respect for other people.
Her favorite pastime was entertaining and cooking Sunday dinner for family and friends. She was also known to some as the “Neighborhood Mom,” as she would often discipline and provide guidance to children of the neighborhood. She enjoyed spending time at Off -Track Betting and playing the New York lottery. She also enjoyed taking long road trips with her husband and children to see family in various states such as South Carolina and New Jersey.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Julius W. Gibson, to whom she was married to for 59 years. She leaves to cherish her son, Julius Fitzgerald (Hilda) Gibson; her daughters, Presi (Shelton) Gibson, Jennifer (Daniel) Hoffman, and DeBorah Baker; and her goddaughter, Sara Hill. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Leah Blakeney, Cor’Darryl Grier, Nicco Grier, Demi Marie Baker, Gabriella Hoffman, and Devin Baker; and her great-grandsons, Levi Virgil and Matae Hollins. Mary leaves her brothers, Joe Robinson Jr. of Charleston, S.C.; and her stepbrother, Robert McCray of Manning, S.C.; her sister-in-law, Mable Miller of Manning, S.C.; and a special niece, Mattie Birch of Goose Creek, S.C., who was more like a sister to her, along with a host of loving nieces and nephews.
She also leaves behind longtime friends, Lottie Mae Hilton and Edna Howard. She was also predeceased by her stepfather, James McCray; her sisters, Dorothy Mae Miller, Louvena Robinson, and Pinese Harris; her stepsister, Beulah McCray; her best friend, Geneva McDonald; and her loving son-in-law, Demond Baker
