Leon Shackelford entered into internal rest at his home on Friday, April 30, 2021. He was born April 18, 1927 to the late Otis and Harriet Brown Shackelford in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Leon received his education in Philadelphia. He enlisted into the US Army and served in Korea and Germany. After serving his county most of his working career consisted of driving tractor trailers, Leon was a member of the Israel AME church.
Leon was a pioneer with over 70 years of square work and service. He was Past Master of Capital City Lodge#78; Soovereign Grand Inspector General 33rd United Supreme Council Albany Consistory #90, HIPP of Al Tabari Temple #121; Past High Pried Zerubbabel #8 HRAM; Past Thrice Illustrious Grand Master Alton J. Bennett #25; Past Eminent Grand Commander; Galilee Commandery#20 and KYCh. He was a true Mason and served in many other positions, he believed in the mission of the Scottish Rite and York Rite of freemasonary, New York/ New Jersey. To improve its members and enhance the communities in which they lived, Leon was teaching and emulating the principles of Brotherly Love, Tolerance, Charity and Truth, while actively embracing high social, moral and spiritual values, including fellowship, compassion and dedication to God, family and county. This was what he loved and what he lived. It is hard to turn the page when you know someone will not be in the next chapter, but the story must go on. May the works he has done speak for him.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter's Rochelle Jones-Pitts, Colette Houze, two grandchildren Hope L. Hurst and Henry L. Hurst, III
Left to celebrate his life Claudette Ford of Albany; Leonora Hurst of Maryland, Harriet (Barry) Trotman of Connecticut, his grandchildren, Kynya, Deirdre, Ebony, Honor, Omar, Jamilah, Brandi, Taron, Star, Brandon, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, cousins, his "Orange St. family & friends" and his Masonic family from around the world.
As penned in scripture: 2Timothy 4:7-8 " I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, judge, will award to on the day."
