Jesse “The Nut” Chestnut, youngest of 14 children, was born in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Bertha and Samuel Chestnut. Growing up in a large family, Jesse learned early how to hold his own and enjoy a little mischief.
After spending his youth in Myrtle Beach, Jesse moved to Montana for Job Corps, then to New York City briefly, before settling in Troy, New York, near his sisters Dorothy and Inez. He worked many years at Adirondack Steel Mill until an injury in 1982 ended his career, but retirement never slowed his spirit.
Jesse welcomed his first child, Arica, before marrying his wife Jeannette in the early 1970s. Together they had Shannon and James “JJ.” Jesse later welcomed children Monaira, Shadasia, and Nashon, growing his big and loving family.
Known for his athleticism and love of baseball, Jesse was a kind and generous man who supported his family and community with unwavering strength. Whether sharing a laugh or offering wise advice, he was the steady rock everyone relied on.
Jesse leaves behind his grandchildren Aquan Hilts, Tyrone (Samantha) Nichols, Arie (Lincoln) Bovell, Shantel Nichols, James Chestnut Jr., Anari Goldsmith, and Kha’nei Goldsmith. His great-grandchildren Arianna Hilts and Skylar Nichols bring joy to his lasting legacy.
A family man who gave his all, Jesse’s legacy of strength, love, and generosity will be forever remembered by all who knew him
