Dawn Altona Best Curtis was born June 3, 1956, the youngest of four daughters to the late Arthur A. Best and the late Ethel C. Best, in the Bronx, New York. We grew up in the Bronxdale Houses and attended PS 36, JHS 123, and William H. Taft HS. Dawn showed an interest in public health and earned a certificate to become a physician’s assistant. As fate would have it, she got a job as a claims adjuster at Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Manhattan. Along the way she met and married Warren Curtis on August 28, 1982, they settled in the Bronx and had two sons, Sean and Garrette. When Dawn’s division at Blue Cross/Blue Shield moved to Albany, New York, they pulled up roots and moved there. Through many upgrades at her job, Dawn retired after 30 years of service. As her sons became adults, they began to have families of their own. Dawn and Warren became grandparents to Sean’s three and Garrette’ s five. Dawn doted on her grands, and they loved their Nana.
Dawn was an amazing knitter. She spun so many blankets, scarves, hats for her family. She was also expert at assembling 1500-piece puzzles, which she had mounted as wall art. The one thing that tickled us the most was her fascination with dolphins. She collected statues, pictures, wind chimes, trinkets of dolphins. She was also an avid television watcher of court shows, cooking shows, reality shows and old black and white television shows and movies.
Dawn had stage 1 diabetes, she did most of her knitting while on dialysis, and she was on a list to receive a kidney transplant. Through it all Dawn maintained a sense of humor and rolled with the punches. When my sister Jessica and I saw her on Easter Sunday she mentioned the surgery which was to take place on April 28, 2022. She seemed resigned to the fact that the surgery was necessary. Five days after the surgery, on May 3, 2022, she passed.
Dawn leaves to cherish her memory, husband Warren, sons Sean and Garrette, grandchildren Issiyah, Jaiyden, Jaeda, Ilyiannnah, Kai (Garrette’s children with his ex-wife) and a grandson Maverick due in June with fiancée Jenise; grandson Giovanni (Sean’s son with an ex-fiancee), granddaughter Kimorah with fiancée Desiree, granddaughter Lakiyah (Desiree’s daughter); sisters Constance, Jessica, Linda, niece Michelline, great-nieces Jazz, Malena, Alyssa, great-great niece Aurora, nephew Terrence, great-nephew Johnnylee, great-great nephew August; cousins and friends.
Dawn, our Beloved, you will live in our hearts forever!
