Booker Moore Obituary

Booker T. Moore departed this world on August 9, 2025.
Booker, also lovingly known as "Booker T.," was the tenth of 11 children born to Arthur and Lenora Moore. He was born on October 17, 1926, in Ahoskie, N.C., bringing joy into the Hertford County household after the recent passing of his paternal grandmother, who had died earlier that year.

He graduated valedictorian from Robert L. Vann High School, where he starred on the varsity basketball team, having made the team beginning in the eighth grade, and eventually served as team captain. He was united in matrimony to Clara (Freeman) Moore on November 28, 1944. Five children were born from this union, William, Michael, Rose, Bryant and Anthony, while he and Clara also raised granddaughter, Katanya, who grew up with Bryant and Anthony. Katanya was lovingly called the "princess" of the household by Booker.

Booker was inducted into military service during World War II, following in the footsteps of his five older brothers. After seeing six stars in their window of their home, a reporter with the hometown paper wrote an article about Booker and brothers, underscoring the unique contribution to the war effort made by the Moore family. Notably, Booker was ultimately promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in General Patton's Third Army, eventually serving as a wartime sergeant. During his service in Germany, Booker saw the horrendous Nazi Dachau concentration camp, which left an indelible impression and fueled his lifelong fight to assist those who cannot fend for themselves.

Following his wartime service, Booker enrolled at Shaw University. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Chorale Society, the Track Team, the Sphinx Club, the Carver Science Club, the Y.M.C.A., and the Veteran's Council. He graduated in 1950, with a Bachelor of Sciences degree. After graduation, he taught at the high school level in Aiken, S.C., before earning his Master's Degree from Columbia University in 1957.

The Moore family relocated to the Albany area in 1958. Booker went on to work as a Health Physicist at the VA Hospital in Albany, N.Y., where he served in the Nuclear Medicine Service. During his career, he published numerous health physics papers and presented his research at conferences.

He lived out and demonstrated his love for the Lord Jesus across the broad spectrum of our community, visiting the sick in nursing homes with his late wife, Clara; ministering in prisons; with wife, Clara, helping aged widows, such as Sister Coles and Sister Hines, serving at the Rescue Mission, and hosting gatherings in his home where he, along with his wife, Clara, made sure all were well fed and saw the love of Christ brought forth. Those food and fellowship infused gatherings often lasted late into Sunday evening, ending with Booker graciously driving guests back home at night.
He sang in churches in the area and was known for his melodious bass vocal range. One of the gospel hymns that he greatly enjoyed singing was, "His Eye Is on the Sparrow."

Booker was predeceased in death by his parents; beloved wife, Clara Moore; sisters, Leatta, Margaret, Evangeline; brothers, Emanuel, Moses, William, Emerson, and Arthur; two siblings who died in infancy, Nathaniel and Mary Madeline; sons, William T. Moore, Michael V. Moore; daughter, Rose Fiddemon; and grandsons, Emanuel Moore (son of Michael V. Moore), Calvin and Roger Fiddemon (sons of the late Calvin and Rose Fiddemon).

He leaves loved ones to honor his memory including, but not limited to, two sons, Bryant T. Moore and Anthony T. Moore; granddaughters, Katanya Moore, Nafeesah Moore, Tauheedah Moore, Deborah Moore, Mary Moore, Claire Moore, Kristen Moore, and Baily Moore; grandsons, Na'im Moore, Phillip Moore, and Daniel Moore; daughter-in-law, Dionne Moore; Aneesha Moore; grandchildren, Naomi Sanders, Rose Fiddemon-Clarke, David Fiddemon, Elijah Fiddemon, Virgil Fiddemon, Joseph Fiddemon, Moses Fiddemon, Aleesha Fiddemon-Ford and Williemae Fiddemon; a host of great-granchildren; and cousins, Delores Johnson, Kwame Johnson and Kevin Johnson; along with nieces and nephews.
