Barbara Jordan: A Life Remembered
A Tribute to a Beloved Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, and Friend
Barbara Jordan was born in Albany, New York, on June 23, 1956, to Mattie White and James Benbow, and was lovingly raised by her second father Johnny Lee White.
On February 1, 2025, Barbara passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family.
Barbara Jordan graduated from Albany High School, where she immediately began laying the foundation for her career and a lifetime of service to her husband and children.
Barbara was employed at Daughters of Sarah, where she dedicated many years of her life before retiring. Her commitment and hard work were exemplary, earning her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and the residents she served.
Barbara was a wonderful woman, and a pillar of strength for our entire family. She loved cooking, especially for her family and friends, and was known throughout Albany for her famous lasagna. Barbara’s doors were always open to anyone in need, and she welcomed everyone with open arms. She treated everyone with respect, and she carried herself with poise, and modesty. Barbara's love for music and dancing brought joy to everyone who knew her, and her vibrant spirit left a lasting mark on the lives she touched.
Barbara Jordan leaves to cherish her loving memory, her husband of 50 years, Albert (Roy) Jordan whom she enjoyed watching sports with, and preparing meals; her six daughters: Martine Jordan, Chenita Jordan, Sha-fara Miller, Rhodesia Jordan, Cheryl Jordan, and Shneecka Alexander; her three sons: Marquis (Roy) Chandler, Jamil Jordan, and Jahmr Jordan; her 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; her parents, Mattie White and James Benbow; her four sisters: Chenita White (Maurice, deceased), Mary White (Michael), Nadine Sadler (Tyyrance), and Etta Benbow; her sister-in-law, Deborah Warfield (Henry); her three brothers: Ronald (Chuckie) Chandler, Johnny White (Sharon), and Norris Benbow (Maria); her brother-in-law, Fred Jordan (Shirley, deceased); and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends that will miss her dearly.
Barbara was predeceased by her second father, Johnny Lee White who raised her with unconditional love, support, and guidance; her mother-in-law, Frankie Jordan; her sisters, Patricia White and Deborah (I-Asia) Maxim and brother-in-law Edward (Eddie) Maxim Sr,; her sisters-in-law, Linda Alexander, Dorsien Inniss, and Nettie Mae Jordan; her grandson, Marquis Chandler; and her nephew, Edward (EJ) Maxim Jr.
Barbara had a close-knit circle of friends and family, but she held a special bond with her two close friends, Linda, and Gene (deceased).
Barbara Jordan's legacy is one of love, generosity, and strength. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
