Alice Campbell Obituary

Alice Campbell Obituary

Alice Ozelle Campbell was born in Gilbertown, Alabama on May 24, 1926 and was the fifth child of 10, born to the late Amie Lancaster-Sledge and Arthur Sledge.

She was the devoted wife of 36 years, to the late Lenward Campbell. Alice was the loving mother of three children; Deborah Jefferson, Andrea and Robin Campbell. She was also Aunt Alice to six generations of nieces and nephews; too many to name. She was raised on a working farm where the guinea was the weather man and the sun was the clock. Alice was educated in the Choctaw County School District, in a one room schoolhouse, with 30 classmates.

Alice married her hometown sweetheart Lenward, on February 7, 1949. He migrated to Albany, NY during the great migration to find employment. After a year, in 1956 she then joined him, followed by her two younger siblings several years later. She began a career at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center, as a Nurses Aide, retiring after 25 years of service. She then went on to provide private duty care throughout the Capital District. Additionally, she was a proud foster parent to many children for many years. Alice was a faithful member of Walls Temple A.M.E. Zion Church for 67 years. She was the oldest living member and often referred to as the mother of the church. She served as a stewardess, a member of the Missionary Society and was the flower guild for almost two decades.

Alice was a very private and humble person, who did her many acts of kindness quietly. She loved to have family gatherings where she cooked large meals and was known for her pound cake, chicken, biscuits, stewed apples and pork chops. Her family was her world and her door was always open for them, friends, and neighbors. When her grandchildren were growing up she was known as the neighborhood grandma. Alice enjoyed sewing, often making clothing for her daughters and nieces. Her flower and vegetable gardens were her pride and joy. Alice enjoyed her daily cup of tea, word searches, newspaper, daily horoscope, and her lottery numbers. She also enjoyed the yearly tradition of gathering for apple picking which included various generations of the family. She was coined the family historian and enjoyed journeying back home and sharing her family history with her relatives. She also loved her cat Lovie and granddogs Sekoya, Rosie, Riley, Oaklin and Dakota who she loved sneaking meat to.

Alice passed away peacefully with her family by her bedside at home in Colonie, NY on January 5, 2025. She leaves to cherish her two children, Andrea and Robin Campbell, Godson David Poole Jr., grandchildren, Thomas and Amie Jefferson, Lynné Graves, Alexander Linder, Miguel (Angela), Carlos, Carlito, Cordero, Ciera, & Corlando Campbell, & a host of great grandchildren, all of Albany New York. Her sisters Sena Sims of Long Beach, CA, Alma Poole of Albany, NY, Veleva Ruth (Sherman) Meachem of Long Beach, CA, Bernard Sledge of Hesperia, CA, and special nieces Diane Turner of Milwaukee, WI, and Myra Pugh of Albany, NY. She was predeceased by her husband Lenward Campbell, her shared daughter Deborah Jefferson, brothers Maynard Sledge-Turner, Nimrod and John Thomas Sledge, and sisters Lillie Mae McGee, and Joanna Bradley.
